Mushrooms for Lockdown

Despite the challenges that the pandemic and the associated period of lockdown has brought it has also been an opportunity for many to boost their health and wellbeing by making lifestyle changes and when considering dietary modifications increasing consumption of mushrooms has many attractions.
With risk from Covid-19 infection rising strongly in those whose immune systems have been weakened by age or pre-existing health conditions, mushrooms’ ability to support immune function is reason enough for us to consume more. Especially delicious culinary mushrooms such as Shiitake and Maitake with proven immunological benefits.

As a valuable non-animal source of Vitamin D (D2) mushrooms also have a role to play in maintaining healthy levels of this important vitamin, particularly in those who are vegetarian and vegan (leave mushrooms in sunlight with the gills uppermost for 60 minutes after purchase to increase levels x10).

Despite the amazing technology helping us cope with the current restrictions it can still be difficult to maintain focus and energy and here again mushrooms can offer valuable support.
Lion’s Mane produces compounds that have been shown to help with nerve repair and is beneficial for a number of neurodegenerative conditions. It has also been shown to have a calming effect, helping with anxiety as well as delivering benefits for memory and mental focus.
As well as its immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory action Reishi is another calming mushroom that can help with anxiety and sleep disturbance. In relation to the current pandemic several compounds from Reishi have also been found to inhibit the formation of ACE-2, which the virus uses to enter host cells.

Traditionally collected from the Tibetan plateau, Cordyceps is used in Chinese medicine to support energy levels, lung and kidney function, indications supported by modern research. In addition cordycepin from Cordyceps militaris has been shown to protect the lungs from acute injury due to the type of inflammatory immune response seen in acute Covid-19 infections.
Enjoy!

Glossworks Mani-Pedi at Home

If like us, your fingertips and toes are looking a bit neglected in lockdown, then Glossworks is here to help.
Glossworks’ nail polish range is never tested on animals and contains no animal products or any of the usual harmful chemicals found in nail varnish like formadehyde, toluene, DBP, camphor, paraben, xylene, ethyl tosylamide and lead.

Set the Scene

Put on your favourite playlist, make yourself a drink, light a scented candle and change into comfortable clothes.

Fill up two large bowls - one for hands and one for feet - with warm water, adding bath salts to help soften the skin. Get comfortable and immerse your feet in the foot bowl.

Prep Hands

While your feet are soaking, it’s time to prep your fingernails. If nails are long, use nail clippers to trim, then shape gently with a nail file into the desired shape. Once you’re happy with the shape, place your fingertips into the finger bowl and soak for four minutes.

Sit back and enjoy the sensation of the warm water.

When the four minutes is up, remove your now-softened fingertips and very gently push back the cuticles, clipping away any loose cuticle with cuticle scissor. Be careful not to damage the cuticle.

Prep Feet

It’s time to turn your attention to your feet. Remove feet from the warm water and use a pumice or foot file to gently remove the hard skin from your heels and the balls of your foot. Dry off your feet, clip then file nails and push back cuticles, as you did with your hands. Massage in a rich moisturiser.

Back to Hand Prep
Dry your nails, then apply a drop of Glossworks’ Nail & Cuticle Oil to every nail, rubbing the oil into the cuticle in a circular motion. Finish by massaging your favourite hand cream into your palms, fingers and knuckles.

Take a cotton bud soaked in Glossworks Polish Remover and remove the excess oil from the nails.

Get Painting
Apply an even base coat of Glossworks’ BB Base Coat to every fingernail for an even-toned, smooth finish, plus it’ll help protect the nail. You could also build up the subtle colour of the BB base coat and use this as your main colour.

Once the base coat is dry, choose one of Glossworks’ Colour Lacquers. Use a generous amount of polish for a smooth coat and try to paint each nail using only three brush strokes: One on the left side, one on the right side and one down the middle. Apply two coats for a richer colour.

If you make a mistake, move on and finish the rest of your nails, then use a cotton bud soaked in nail varnish remover and start the nail again.

Once the colour coats are dry, finish off your manicure with a final coat of Glossworks’ multi-functional 3-in-1 polish, which prevents chipping and gives an extra-glossy finish.

Sit back, enjoy your music or podcast and sip your drink while you wait for your nails to dry. This might take up to fifteen minutes.

Once your nails are dry, repeat the process with your toes.

Hair Removal at Home

Hair removal is proving tricky during lockdown with salons closed, so we’ve pulled together our favourite at-home hair removal methods and aftercare advice.

Legs

Although shaved hair does grow quickly, it’s painless, fast, cost-effective and low on waste. Lather up Dr Bronner’s Lemongrass Shaving Soap and massage into damp legs then use Zero Waste Club’s stainless steel razor in long, upward strokes, taking particular care around knees and ankles.

Underarms, Bikini Line and Upper Lip

As these areas are more sensitive and prone to ingrown hairs, we like to use Acorelle’s hypoallergenic sensitive wax strips, made only with natural ingredients and enriched with aloe vera and organic honey.

Method:

  1. Prep skin the day before by exfoliating with a mitt, scrub or body brush to remove dead skin cells.
  2.
  3. Make sure skin is clean and free from any products when you’re ready to start waxing.
  4.
  5. Warm up the way strip by rubbing between the palm of your hands. Pull apart and set one half aside.
  6.
  7. Apply the strip onto the area, smoothing down in the direction of hair growth
  8. .
  9. For your upper lip, this would mean smoothing down from your nose towards your chin.
  10.
  11. Pull the skin taught and rip in the opposite direction to hair growth. Do it quickly and with intent, otherwise you’ll have to do the area again!
  12.
  13. Areas like the underarms and bikini line have different directions of hair growth, so you may need to go over the same patch at different angles to get all of the hairs.
  14.
  15. Work methodically across the area until most of the hair are gone. Tidy up with a pair of tweezers.
  16.
  17. Use the sweet almond oil to help remove any tacky bits of wax and to nourish the area.

Maintenance

Ingrown hairs can be a problem will all methods of hair removal. The best way to prevent them is by exfoliating the skin between hair removals. We like to use a Hydrea’s dry body brush on our legs before showering and a body scrub in the bath or shower to slough off dead skin cells.

Hair removal - especially shaving - can leave skin feeling dry, so make sure to keep skin moisturised. We love Fushi’s Really Good Cellulite Oil or Virgin Shea Butter to nourish and repair.

How to use aromatherapy to reduce stress

Feeling unsettled and apprehensive in these testing times? Uncertainty and unwelcome change will naturally cause feelings of stress to emerge and things can get a little overwhelming. Aromatherapy is an effective and enjoyable tool to help you find calm amid this quiet chaos.

The Tisserand Aromatherapy Total De-Stress Diffuser Oil is pre-blended with Geranium, Orange and Nutmeg to help you slow down, breathe and reclaim your calm. But if you would like to try blending yourself, there are many essential oil combinations that you can use to help keep calm, find clarity, gently uplift your mood and balance fraught emotions.

Starting out:
There are many safe ways to use essential oils, including through bathing, massage and diffusion. When starting out, we recommend following the below dilution and usage guidance and practicing caution as pure essential oils can be hazardous when used incorrectly. Please seek more specific oil advice regarding children and pregnant women.

Adding essential oils to a base oil like Tisserand Aromatherapy Sweet Almond Blending Oil gives you a blend you can use safely in contact with the skin – either directly in massage or in a bath. Never use essential oils neat on the skin or in the bath.

A blend is a mix of 2-5 different essential oils, although we consider 3 essential oils in combination to be the best synergy.

Try using the following oils together:
  • For soothing mind and body - Lavender, Bergamot & Roman Chamomile
  • For deep relaxation - Frankincense, Neroli & Bergamot
  • For positive productivity - May Chang, Lavender & Rosemary
  • For mental clarity - Peppermint, Lemon & Eucalyptus
  • To stay in control - Cypress, Frankincense & Lemon

Or try your own combination!

Usage guidance:
DIFFUSER
Fill your diffuser with water, such as the Tisserand Aromatherapy Aroma Spa Diffuser, and add 6-8 drops in total (e.g. 2 drops Frankincense, 1-2 drops Neroli & 3-4 drops Bergamot) of your chosen essential oils.

MASSAGE

Use 10 drops in total (e.g. 4 drops Lavender, 4 drops Bergamot & 2 drops Roman Chamomile) of your chosen essential oils per 20ml of blending oil. Using sweeping movements, apply to area of the body in need of a massage, re-applying as the blend absorbs into the skin.

Safety guidance for massage blend:
  • Suitable for 11 years +
  • Do not use on the face. Seek separate guidance for use on face
  • This is applicable for all skin types where there are no skin sensitive issues

BATH

Add 4-6 drops in total (e.g. 1-2 drops May Chang, 2-3 drops Lavender & 1 drop Rosemary) of your chosen essential oils to 20ml of blending oil. Just before carefully stepping in, pour half of the mixture into the water and swirl around, lie back and relax!

From our homes to yours, keep calm and stay safe.

P.S. You’re doing great!

Tofu Salad Wraps

Egg-less salad is a traditional favorite in many vegan households. Our recipe is a standard one that uses simple ingredients. You can always add more as desired. We enjoy this egg-less salad on English muffins for breakfast, on whole what toast as sandwiches or wrapped in flour tortillas for a great lunch.

Tofu Salad Wraps

Yield: 6 wraps or 4 sandwiches

Ingredients:

  • 16 ounces tofu
  • ½ cup vegan mayonnaise
  • 2 stalks celery
  • ½ red bell pepper
  • 2-3 teaspoon mustard, (more if you prefer)
  • splash pickle juice, or vinegar
  • ¾-1 teaspoon turmeric
  • ½-¾ teaspoons black salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • flour tortillas

Making Tofu Salad Wraps

Directions:

  1. Blot the tofu with pepper towels using gently but firm pressure to remove as much water as possible.
  2. Slice the the tofu into very small cubes.
  3. Place the cubed tofu in a bowl.
  4. Clean and cut the celery into small cubes and add to the tofu.
  5. Cut the red bell pepper, remove any seeds and cut into small pieces.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the vegan mayonnaise, mustard, turmeric, black pepper, pickle juice and black salt.
  7. Taste the mixture and adjust the seasonings to your taste.
  8. Some people enjoy a bit of onion, and also relish, we tend to prefer just the simple salad.
  9. When the dressing is flavored as you wish, pour it over the tofu, clearly and red pepper pieces and gently mix to make the egg-less salad.
  10. To make the wraps:
    1. Place a flour tortilla on a cutting board.
    2. Lay 2 tablespoons of egg-less salad along one side of the flour tortilla.
    3. Roll the warp over the egg-less salad. You can do this in either of 2 ways. You can fold in the sides as you roll. That would make a closed “bottom” as you eat Or, you can roll the tortilla all the way, leaving the ends open and then usually eat the tortilla with a knife and fork.
