Homemade Chicken and Rice Dog Food Recipe: Filler-Free and Dog-Gone Delicious

Homemade Chicken and Rice Dog Food Recipe: Filler-Free and Dog-Gone DeliciousA warm meal of chicken and rice is a popular comfort food for humans. Why not make this comforting dish for your pet with our homemade dog food recipe? Gluten-free and easy to make, this chicken and rice dinner features fresh vegetables, organic free-range chicken breast meat, and a stir-in of bone meal powder for extra oomph.

Always use organic, free-range chicken meat from sustainable sources when you cook meals for yourself and for your pet. Choose organic vegetables and ingredients whenever possible. If you don’t have peas and carrots on hand, you can substitute with other vegetables – but remember, dogs should never eat onions, corn or avocados.

You’ll find bone meal powder at reputable pet stores. Do not use the bone meal sold at home and garden supply stores, which is not for dog food purposes and often contains fertilizers and other additives. For an appropriate multivitamin and mineral supplement for your dog, ask your veterinarian to recommend the right product for your pet.

If your dog is a picky eater, you may have to upgrade the flavor profile – and it’s easy to do so if you take fish oil supplements. Pop open one of your capsules and drizzle the top of the serving with fish oil, about 20 milligrams per pound of body weight. Be careful not to overdose – you don’t want to over-grease your dog’s digestive tract.

This tasty homemade dog food recipe is intended for a healthy, active adult dog. It contains protein, carbohydrates, fat and supplements for a well-rounded canine meal. It makes one serving for one 40-pound dog. If your best friend is a 10-pound Chihuahua, reduce the portion served and refrigerate or freeze the rest for a treat at a later date.

Ingredients

1 cup organic, free-range, boneless, skinless chicken breast pieces, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1 teaspoon organic vegetable oil
1/3 cup fresh green peas (or frozen green peas, thawed)
¼ cup carrot, finely chopped
1 ½ teaspoons fresh basil, finely chopped (or ½ teaspoon dried basil)
2 teaspoons gluten-free tamari sauce
¾ cup long-grain brown rice, cooked
1 teaspoon bone meal powder
Pet-specific mineral supplement and multivitamin

Directions

  1. Heat your vegetable oil over medium heat in a large non-stick skillet. You can also use a wok.
  1. Add the organic chicken pieces and cook, stirring, until the meat is no longer pink.
  1. Now add your peas, carrots, chopped basil, and tamari sauce. Cook for about three minutes while stirring, or until the carrots are tender-crisp. Remove everything from the heat.
  1. Stir in your precooked brown rice. Let the mixture cool until lukewarm – you don’t want to burn your dog’s mouth.
  1. Finally, stir in your bone meal and supplement. Pile the meal in a doggie dish and serve right away.

Please note: Some dogs’ digestive systems are more sensitive than others. Please consult with your veterinarian before feeding your dog any special foods or out-of-the-ordinary meals, including this homemade dog food recipe.
