The summer surely pumped some energy into your mood and added welcome color to your complexion. It may have also been a time when you naturally ate lighter, healthier foods and were easily more active. However, the summer carries with it it’s own setbacks that you should take into consideration while entering the new season. These detox tips will help make the transition that much easier and leave you with a ready mind, body, and soul.
1. Sweat it out
As if you haven’t sweat enough under the blazing summer sun, it is time to do it all over again. The infrared sauna is one of the most effective detox instruments around. It works quite differently than regular saunas, which heat the skin from the outside; the infrared sauna’s ambient temperature stays relatively cool and instead uses light to heat the skin from the inside out, penetrating the skin much deeper and drawing out toxins and heavy metals. In fact, it helps you to sweat out as much as seven times more toxins than the traditional Swedish sauna.
Why does this matter entering into the fall season? While booking a regular infrared sauna session makes for a great year-round habit, it may be especially important after the summer. Consider how much sunscreen you applied as well as other lotions that either offset the drying effects of the sun or attempted to ward off its harmful rays. The skin is the largest organ of the body and absorbs whatever is put on it. Most sunscreens are packed with harmful ingredients. The infrared sauna will help to reverse their effects.
Visit your local spa to use an infrared sauna. Start with 15-30 minutes and slowly increase your time in the sauna as you become more accustomed to it. Afterwards, rinse and scrub your skin clean.
2. Use a Dry Skin Brush
Dry skin brushing should be something you add to your daily morning routine before you work out or shower, regardless of the season. However, it is an exceptionally helpful practice after a period of time exposed to the sun. Sun exposure can dry out the skin and leave it flaky and dull after a few weeks into cooler weather. Dry skin brushing eliminates dead skin cells, stimulates the lymphatic system to detoxify the body’s many organs, and improves circulation, revealing smoother and suppler skin.
3. Drink Green
Surprise, surprise! Of all the detox tips on this list, drinking green juice is perhaps the most efficient and effective thing you choose. Perhaps you continued your green juice habit throughout the summer, but if it fell to the wayside or you have yet to start the ritual, it’s time to get (back) on board.
Green juice effectively allows you to bring the sunshine of the summer with you, even when under a cloudy, rainy sky. View green juice as liquid sunshine – it’s full of green leaf chlorophyll, fueling your cells’ alkalinity.
Avoid other fruit and vegetable-based juices that are without green leaves – think spinach, romaine, kale, and collard greens – in order to forego an unnecessary sugar-rush. If juice isn’t your thing, try a green smoothie instead.
4. Renew Your Facial Skin
Your face may be the part of your body that takes most of the beating in the summer. Under the sun, it burns and in the humidity, it can become super oily and may break out or more prominently display blackheads. Put your best and freshest face forward with a deep cleansing activated charcoal face mask. It’s easy to make and will leave you glowing!
Activated charcoal is also gaining hype in its juice form, but it works just as well as a cosmetic ingredient. Here’s how to make a simple, 3-ingredient mask in under 1 minute.
Activated Charcoal Mask
For one mask
Ingredients
- 2 capsules activated charcoal
- ½ teaspoon bentonite clay
- 1 ½ teaspoons water
Directions
Mix all the ingredients together to form a smooth paste. Cleanse the skin with your regular cleanse and then apply the mask to your face, avoiding the eyes and lips. Let dry for up to ten minutes before washing clean. Pat your face dry with a clean towel. Let your facial skin breath for a few minutes before applying your regular moisturizer.
5. Slurp Soups
Try a one-three day all-soup cleanse to clean the slate before venturing into heavier autumn foods. Juice cleanses are all the rage these days, but soups are beginning to gain some footing among detox enthusiasts. Soups contain fiber, unlike juices, so they require more active digestion and are a less intense way to detox the system. However, soups take a lot of the chewing out the equation, so you get an easily digestible meal that also happens to be filling, warming, and delicious.
Make your favorite soup recipes, but nix the oil, butter, salt, spices, and potent ingredients, such as garlic, onions, and peppers. Keep it completely vegetable based and try to relish in the authenticity of the flavors, sans the boosters.
